Alamos
We left El Fuerte early this morning after saying goodbye to our new friends and drove to Alamos, only a few hours away. The town was pretty and reminded me of a smaller and less restored version of San Miguel. We did a quick tour of the town on our bikes and saw most of what there was to see in about a half hour. The zocalo contains nicely landscaped gardens in the Plaza de Armas, facing which is a pretty Cathedral, La Parroquia de la Purisima Conception. We rode up a small hill to the Casa de la Cultura en Loma Guadalupe, where we had a nice view of the city below. In the last fifty years, many wealthy Americans have purchased and renovated large homes in the town, restoring some of Alamos’ former glory. Unfortunately, a walk through town alone doesn’t reveal much of the restoration work, since the homes are typically Spanish and are built around courtyards enclosed by high, unimpressive ramparts. Alamos’ main draw is its Saturday house tour, when you can visit some of the grander homes and their inner courtyards. Unfortunately, we are here on a Thursday and aren’t interested in staying two more days to see it. It was a nice stop, but there was little reason to stay longer.
