El Fuerte
We spent 3 nights in Teacapan, the last two in a villa with full kitchen because it was cheap and seemed like a good idea. The villas were part of the same campground and had a nice view of the ocean. We spotted a pod of dolphins just off the beach, jumping clear out of the water. There was an amazing resort-grade pool too, where we spent much of our hot days. I can’t say much about the town itself, but it certainly is located on a pretty beach. It looks like they plan to develop the area for tourism, as the resort development giant, Fondatur, has set up shop nearby.
We are now in El Fuerte, a dusty little flea-ridden town. There aren’t many places I’ve full out disliked in Mexico, but this gets top marks. We’re only here because this is the best base from which to leave on the Chepe train tomorrow. The train climbs to 2,400 m through Copper Canyon, a rugged series of picturesque canyons that have led some to call this the most scenic railroad trip on the continent. We plan to make three overnight stops during the trip: Bahuichivo, Posada and Divisadero. I’m looking forward to it (and not just so I can get out of this place!)
