February 24, 2009 San Miguel de Allende – East and South End

Our second day in San Miguel was a bit quieter, but just as enjoyable as the first.  Today, we climbed a hill at the East end of San Miguel to El Mirador, a nice vantage point above the city, to take in the view of the valley below.  It was pretty, although not as spectacular as the view from above Guanajuato.

We walked on to the Parque Juarez at the South end of the city via El Chorro.  Everything in San Miguel is picturesque, but this outshone all we’d seen yet.  As we scaled a modest hill on a curved stone inlaid staircase, we passed pristine mansions covered in vines and pretty fountains, all in the shadow of ancient trees with trunks the size of small cars.  The hillside was lavishly landscaped and everything was so peaceful, it seemed as though we’d stepped back in time.  Perched atop the hill was the antiquated Santa Cruz del Chorro stone church with a view of the verdant hill below.

We descended the hill into the park itself, an area converted to parkland from fruit orchards that had belonged to some of the city’s oldest families. The park led to a fantastic playground where Sienna spent the afternoon tearing around with new playmates.
